Xiaomi couldn’t have wished for better timing of two reports that claim it has toppled Samsung to become India’s top-selling smartphone company. The Chinese firm, which is reportedly on a roadshow ahead of an IPO that could value it as high as $100 billion, is said to have beaten Samsung ’s sales efforts in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market behind China, according to new data from Canalys and Counterpoint. Data from both analyst houses gave Xiaomi a narrow lead over Samsung in the final quarter of 2017, with 27 percent and 25 percent, respectively, according to Canalys — and 25 percent versus 23 percent, according to Counterpoint. Counterpoint included year-long figures, which conclude that Samsung (24 percent) is ahead of Xiaomi (19 percent) over the longer timeframe. After delivering the promised  Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Mi A1 , Xiaomi now plans to release a similar update for the  Mi Mix 2 , the sequel to the phablet that changed the way smartphone makers design their products. Xiaomi has just announced that it is now recruiting testers for its Android Oreo beta program for the Mi Mix 2. More importantly, the recruitment is made for the global version of the highly-anticipated update. According to Xiaomi,  Mi Mix 2  owners interested to participate in the beta program will be able to apply until the end of January 8. Applications are accepted from all regions, but all communication will be made in English. One last requirement that you should meet is that you must be using the latest MIUI Global Developer ROM, meaning your Mi Mix 2 should run the latest stable version of Android.

Xiaomi's first Android One smartphone, the  Mi A1  is finally eligible for an Android 8.0 Oreo update after a short period of beta testing. Unlike many of its Android smartphones that are selling exclusively in China, the Mi A1 is available in a lot more countries. Also, since it's part of the Android One program, the smartphone should be among the first to receive a major Android OS update. Unfortunately, it took Xiaomi quite a long time to bring Oreo to the Mi A1. Initially  introduced in China in early September , the Mi A1 made its debut in  select European markets  one month later. Xiaomi India on Thursday launched the selfie-centric Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite smartphones and announced the release of the global version of MIUI 9 -- an upgrade to its customised Android-based operating system (OS).
