WSJ: Apple product delays double in length with Tim Cook as CEO

Image
Under Tim Cook, Apple new product delays have doubled According to today's  Wall Street Journal , Apple has seen the time between announcing a new product and shipping it rise to 23 days during the past six years. During the six years before that, the average was only 11 days. This is not a good sign for the tech titan. Apple used to keep lead times short to prevent rival tech firms from responding to a new product from Cupertino. These delays can also upset customers and cost the company money. One example of a product delay that hurt Apple in its pocketbook is the ongoing one with the HomePod smart speaker. Devised by Amazon, this product combines a speaker and a virtual assistant. Amazon launched the device in 2015 and this year many smart speakers were purchased for Christmas and Hanukah. Apple originally was hoping to join in with a December launch of its premium HomePod smart speaker, priced at $349. But the device was not ready in time, and is  now expected to b

Spotify now has 70 million paying subscribers, nearly double that of Apple Music

Image
The world's most popular streaming service Spotify has announced that it has added 10 million paying subscribers in the last six months and now has a total of 70 million paying subs. Unlike Apple Music, Spotify also offers free, ad-monetized music streaming. It has more than 70 million subscribers using that free service, so counting the two types of Spotify listeners together, the service now has over 140 million total subs. Apple Music, in comparison, last reported having 30 million subscribers in September 2017, all of them paying a monthly fee. Spotify charges its premium users a flat, $10 monthly fee for music streaming, the same as other major services like Apple Music, Tidal and Deezer. Spotify, however, also offers discounts for some users like students, and it has a neat Spotify Family service that allows signing up to 6 people on the same account for just $15 a month. The company is also now preparing for an initial public offering (IPO). It has conf

Apple says iOS is vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre issues

Image
Yesterday, we told you about a pair of exploits called Meltdown and Spectre. We focused on the latter because it can affect ARM flavored processors which are used on mobile devices like Android and iOS smartphones. As we told you,  Google's Android Security patch for January will help protect Android users  from having passwords held in a browser, or in a password manager, stolen by a nameless, faceless hacker. Apple has joined the club. The company said today that all of its Macs and iOS devices are vulnerable to the same issues. However, Apple says that it has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2 that protect iPhone units, iPod touches and iPad tablets from Meltdown. Apple Watch is not at risk since it runs watchOS. Apple says that despite fears from users, these updates have not slowed down the performance of the Apple devices that received them. Another update is coming to protect the Safari browser from Spectre. Apple says that this update can slow the browser, but by no

iPhone sales could suffer from Apple's $29 battery replacement program, here are the estimated numbers

Image
Apple's decision to lower the price of iPhone battery replacements to $29 (from $79; 63% discount) could cut into its 2018 smartphone sales. These observations were made by Barclays analysts, but anyone following the Battery Gate scandal would have guessed as much. However, Barclays also has estimates on what the potential damage could be. According to company analyst Mark Moskowitz, a whopping 77% or 519 million iPhone users are eligible to replace their battery via the program. Here are his calculations: In our base case scenario, 10% of those 519M users take the $29 offer, and around 30% of them decide not to buy a new iPhone this year. This means around 16M iPhone sales could be at risk, creating ~4% downside to our current revenue estimate for C2018. As you've probably heard, these developments are a direct result of Apple's admission of slowing down iPhones with older batteries in certain situations in order to prevent more serious issues.  In

Analysts see uphill climb for Apple HomePod as Amazon and Google rule smart speaker market

Image
2017 was the first year that smart speakers became extremely popular as Christmas and Chanukah gifts. Amazon, who created the category in 2015 with the Amazon Echo, has a huge lead in market share over Google and its Google Home series. This past holiday shopping season saw both Amazon and Google fight over market share by cutting the price on their low-end smart speaker. Combined, both firms have a large lead in smart speaker market share. During the holidays, the Amazon Echo Dot and the Google Home Mini were both priced at $29. Both were about $50 prior to the sale. Amazon's cost to produce the Echo Dot is roughly $31 a unit according to ABI Research. And while it takes only $26 to build the Google Home Mini, the $3 gross profit was eaten up by overhead, shipping and other costs. That means that both Amazon and Google took a little hit to the bottom line, just to try and increase their smart speaker market share. A fight for market share could be bad for Apple, w

iPhone with 6.5-inch OLED screen could debut this year, LG Display to start shipping panels for Apple in H2 2018

Image
LG Display might not have produced a single OLED panel for Apple in 2017, but it looks like things are about to change this year. A new report from South Korea suggests that Apple is planning to diversify its OLED suppliers for the next iPhones. Sources of  The Investor  state that LG Display is close to inking an OLED supply deal with Cupertino and is expected to start panel shipments in the second half of 2018. This information is unofficial, but the display maker did previously confirm that it was in talks with Tim Cook & Co. over a possible agreement. According to the latest information, LG Display will only produce about 15-16 million panels in 2018. If this turns out to be accurate, it would mean that Samsung Display would still produce the majority of OLED panels for the upcoming iPhones, as Apple typically sells more than 200 million handsets per year. 5.8/6-INCH AND 6.5-INCH OLED IPHONES INCOMING? The report also mentions the possible screen sizes of t

Which phone has the best battery life in 2015, 2016 and 2017?

Image
Which phones had the best battery life in 2017? And does battery life on phones ever improve or does it stay roughly the same throughout the years? At techmedias, we do a standardized proprietary battery test on all phones that we review. We test every device diligently: we make sure that its screen is set at the same brightness level and to ensure this we measure brightness level down to the nit with a special colorimeter, we also turn off external notifications and other sources of power drain that might skew the results of our test. For some phones, we double-test if we have doubts about the results. This gives us a comprehensive picture of battery life numbers for all major flagships not just in 2017, but also through the wider lens of time. As 2017 winds down to a close, we take a look at all the major flagship phones of the year and their battery life performance, and we compare the results to the average battery life of flagships in 2016 and 2015 to see if there is a
