Best new icon packs for Android (January, February, March 2018)

Image
New year, new resolutions, and in our case, new icon packs! While the vast majority of Android consumers use their devices without customizing these at all, a smaller group of Android enthusiasts can hardly go for more than a week before overhauling the appearance of their homescreens. What can we say, we are guilty of that as well! Thanks to the multitude of icon packs arriving weekly on the Play Store, that's as easy as abc. This is why we regularly show you the icon packs that have recently made their way to the Play Store and deserve your attention. Have in mind that you'd normally need a third-party launcher in order to change your stock icons with some of the beautiful suites right. Note that as a rule of thumb these are usually compatible with all third-party launchers that support icon packs, such as Nova, Apex, etc. Here follow the best new ones that have made it to the Play Store for the month of December 2017. Android Messages 2.8 introduces a white navigation bar

Image
White navigation bar in Google Messages 2.8 In November of last year, it became clear that Google has a plan to  mitigate screen burn-in on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL  by introducing light-colored nav bars in its apps. Well, to be absolutely fair, this won't negate the problem, per se, but rather "even out" the burn-in, so you don't end up with an imprint of the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. The Google app and Google Photos were first in tow to receive the treatment, and now it's time for Android Messages to follow suit. One of the biggest culprits for uneven screen burn-in on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, as well as last year's models, is the persistent navigation bar that Google uses – a black stripe with bright, white buttons. Since the navbar is almost always on-screen, after extended use, it is bound to leave its mark on the OLED panel. Or rather, preserve the area at the bottom, while the rest of the screen gradually succumbs to bur

Apple says iOS is vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre issues

Image
Yesterday, we told you about a pair of exploits called Meltdown and Spectre. We focused on the latter because it can affect ARM flavored processors which are used on mobile devices like Android and iOS smartphones. As we told you,  Google's Android Security patch for January will help protect Android users  from having passwords held in a browser, or in a password manager, stolen by a nameless, faceless hacker. Apple has joined the club. The company said today that all of its Macs and iOS devices are vulnerable to the same issues. However, Apple says that it has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2 that protect iPhone units, iPod touches and iPad tablets from Meltdown. Apple Watch is not at risk since it runs watchOS. Apple says that despite fears from users, these updates have not slowed down the performance of the Apple devices that received them. Another update is coming to protect the Safari browser from Spectre. Apple says that this update can slow the browser, but by no

Instagram users may soon be able to post their Stories to WhatsApp

Image
Instagram Stories, by design a clone of Snapchat's once defining feature, have been rapidly growing in popularity ever since their introduction back in March, 2017. Despite the feature's initial inept integration in Facebook, the things went quite well when the company introduced it to Instagram. So well, in fact, that Instagram Stories have by now far its Snapchat counterpart in terms of popularity, boasting some 300 million daily active users as of November, 2017. But Facebook's efforts of pushing the format show no signs of abating. In fact, the company is now experimenting cross-posting Stories to t:WhatsApp, albeit only in Brazil. According to  TechCrunch,  who received official confirmation from Facebook, the feature is being tested with a limited number of people in Brazil, with a wider rollout in the cards for later this year. The users who have access to the feature are able to share their Instagram Stories directly to WhatsApp, as a WhatsApp Status.

Microsoft to bring Mobile View mode to Office for iOS

Image
Mobile View is the new feature iOS users will benefit when using one  Microsoft's Office apps , specifically Word. The developers have just announced that a couple of new features and improvements will be added to the Office package on the iOS this month. The most important, Mobile View is supposed to adjust a document to the iPad screen so that you won't have to pinch and zoom whenever a document doesn't fit the size of tablet's display. Word app will also receive Learning Tools, which enable users to adjust text spacing, column width, and page color. Keep in mind though that this feature will require an  Office 365 subscription . Furthermore, some new accessibility settings will be implemented in  Word, Excel, and PowerPoint , such as the option to use large text to make documents, worksheets, and presentations easier to work with. Finally, all three Office apps will allow iOS 11 users to drag and drop documents between apps easier than ever. You'll also be ab

Android Oreo support and a few new features are coming to Samsung Music

Image
Samsung's own music app has just been updated with support for Android Oreo and a host of other improvements as well, making the stock music player on the Galaxy S8, S8+, Note 8, and other Galaxies that much better. Version 16.2.08.22 of the t:app weighs in at t:26MB and aside from supporting the latest Android flavor, the music app now has an alphabetic scroll index present that allows for sorting by name, making finding different tracks and artists a much easier ordeal; it also now has shuffle playback, an edge light off option for devices that sport an edge display, and a ton of bug fixes. This makes t:Samsung Music yet another addition to the host of Samsung apps that have already been updated with support for Android Oreo. As usual, the update is being catered by Sammy's Galaxy Apps store, which should push the update automatically to your device. If it doesn't, however, it wouldn't hurt to check out manually. Funnily enough, there is no ETA for the

New OnePlus Switch app allows users to migrate data to a new OnePlus smartphone

Image
OnePlus continues make some of its apps available separate downloads in order to be able to update them faster and more often.  After launching several of its own apps  in the Google Play Store, the company announced a new way to easier transfer all your data from a device to a new OnePlus smartphone. The new OnePlus Switch application is compatible with just about any smartphone that runs Android 5.0 or higher and allows users to migrate all of their data including contacts, messages, and photos stored on the previous device to a new  OnePlus smartphone . For the time being, the application supports the transfer of Contacts, Messages, Call Logs, Calendar, Photos, Video, Audio and Applications (without data). However, OnePlus confirmed that it will soon provide “Applications with data” transfers as well. OnePlus Switch does not support iOS devices, so if you plan on dumping your iPhone for a OnePlus smartphone, you won't be able to transfer your data using this application.
