Xiaomi Overtakes Samsung To Top Spot In India’s Smartphone Market

Image
Xiaomi couldn’t have wished for better timing of two reports that claim it has toppled Samsung to become India’s top-selling smartphone company. The Chinese firm, which is reportedly on a roadshow ahead of an IPO that could value it as high as $100 billion, is said to have beaten Samsung ’s sales efforts in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market behind China, according to new data from Canalys and Counterpoint. Data from both analyst houses gave Xiaomi a narrow lead over Samsung in the final quarter of 2017, with 27 percent and 25 percent, respectively, according to Canalys — and 25 percent versus 23 percent, according to Counterpoint. Counterpoint included year-long figures, which conclude that Samsung (24 percent) is ahead of Xiaomi (19 percent) over the longer timeframe. A glance at the previous year’s figures shows that Xiaomi has closed what was once a significant gap with its rival. It’s also striking just how dominant the pair are. Together they account f

Samsung Says "Nigeria Is Incampable Of Manufacturing Mobile Phones"

Image
The Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Samsung Electronics Africa, Mr. Sung Yoon, on Thursday disclosed that manufacturing a mobile phone required about 400 different components, none of which is available in Nigeria. Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, he stated that another reasons Samsung Electronics could not establish a manufacturing plant in Nigeria is because the company’s market share in the country is not big enough. Yoon pointed out that though Samsung was the leading consumer electronics company in Nigeria, its share of the Nigerian market is smaller to South Africa’s. He said that the company’s smartphones market size in South Africa is 80 per cent, but is lower in Nigeria…

A leaked Android 8 build for Galaxy S8 brings Dolby Atmos to the phone!

Image
With recent stirrings in the Samsung Beta Program for Android 8 on the Galaxy S8 and S8+, it's become obvious that an official update to the next major Android build is drawing near. Official info from the company now states that the Beta Program will be closed on January 15th. This falls in line with earlier reports, which claimed that Android 8 Oreo will be pushed to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in late January. Also, reports of Oreo hitting Note 8units have also surfaced today. An unreleased beta build has now leaked on Reddit and fans were quick to sideload it on their phones. They discovered that their Galaxy S8 devices (the US variant equipped with the Snapdragon 835 processor) now have a Dolby Atmos toggle in settings! Dolby Atmos is an audio software, which fine-tunes EQ settings and surround emulation for when the user is wearing headphones. As can be seen from one of the screenshots found in the Reddit thread where the leak is discussed, we have 4 presets to choose from —

Some Samsung Galaxy Note 8 units receive Android 8.0 Oreo official update

Image
It appears that Samsung is seeding an official version of Android 8.0 Oreo to some Galaxy Note 8 units. At the time of writing, the company hasn't announced anything regarding the rollout, but multiple Reddit users have confirmed that the update has landed on their phones. By the looks of it, this could be a soak test, meaning that Samsung might be releasing the update on a very small number of devices to see how it holds up before a broader rollout.  Still, this is a rather surprising turn of events, as the company has an Oreo beta testing program, but it's for the Galaxy S8/S8+ and not for the 6.3-inch phablet. The aforementioned Oreo Beta program is ending on January 15, which is a strong indication that we're not too far off from seeing an official Oreo build land on Samsung's high-end 2017 phones.  The build number of the new update is  R16NW.N950FXXU2CRA1.DM . There aren't any screenshots of the changelog, but one Reddit user was

Samsung's foldable smartphone might include technology similar to Apple's 3D Touch

Image
If Samsung manages to launch the  long-rumored Galaxy X , the foldable smartphone might benefit from some technologies that have yet to make it in any of the company's products. One of these technologies is already implemented by the competition and everyone knows them as  3D Touch  (Apple) or Force Touch (Huawei). To some degree, Samsung implemented the pressure-sensitive technology to the  Galaxy S8 /S8+, but it's only present around the virtual home button. Last year, the South Korean giant filed for a patent that describes a technology similar to Apple's 3D Touch and Huawei's  Force Touch , just that it's applied to a flexible display instead. Adding sensors that are pressure-sensitive under a flat display is no small feat, so implementing the same technology in a bendable screen is certainly harder. But the Galaxy X might not be the first Samsung smartphone with a pressure-sensitive display, especially with the  Galaxy S9/S9+  launch just around the corner. E

Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) to be sold in India as an Amazon exclusive

Image
In India, the Samsung Galaxy S8+ is an Amazon Exclusive The  Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018)  and  Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018)  will launch in India this month. With the Infinity Display present on both models, these will be cheaper substitutes for Sammy's 2017 flagships. And pricing is important in India, which is the second largest smartphone market in the world after China. With a low per capita income, Indian smartphone buyers have to do their research on whether a certain handset is affordable. When the Samsung Galaxy A8+ (2018) launches in India, it will be an Amazon exclusive. We come to that conclusion thanks to a teaser on the Amazon India website that allows those interested in the phone to leave their email address so they can be notified when pre-orders start. The teaser lists the phone as being an Amazon Exclusive. We expect pricing to be in the range of 38,000-42,000 Indian Rupees, which translates to $600-$650 USD.  The phone features a 6-inch Super AMOLED panel with a

Final Android 8 Oreo is coming to multiple Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices

Image
For a while now, Samsung has been running  a Beta program  for early adopters that wish to test out Android 8 Oreo on their devices before it hits the public in an official update. Last we heard, enlisted  Galaxy S8  and  Galaxy S8+  devices were receiving  their fifth Oreo beta patch , fixing both major and minor bugs. It now seems that Samsung is prepping to roll out the update to a number of its S8 and S8+ phones worldwide. Watchers have spotted multiple versions of the flagship duo getting certifications over at the Wi-Fi Alliance — a non-profit that certifies Wi-Fi products. The models that went through are SM-G950F, SM-G955F, SM-G950FD, SM-G955FD, SM-G950N, SM-G955N, SM-G950X, SM-G955X, SM-G950XN, SM-G955XN, SM-G950XC. Translation: these are the European, Asian (India and Singapore), Korean, and Global versions of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. And this does fall in line with earlier reports that stated the official update would be arriving  by the end of Janua

New Samsung trademark hints at Galaxy S9/S9+ camera improvements

Image
Samsung earlier today unveiled the  Exynos 9810  officially – the first true 9-series Exynos SoC that will power Samsung's flagship phones in 2018, in some markets, at least. Coincidentally, the South Korean tech giant also filed a new trademark in its home country today, that may very well hint at some of the camera improvements bound for its 2018 lineup. The phrase  “The Camera. Reimagined.”  was trademarked by the company earlier today, giving us an early glimpse at some of the possible camera improvements for the Galaxy S9 and S9+, and maybe even the Note 9 further down the line. But what does the announcement of the new Exynos chipset has to do with the camera capabilities of future Samsung phones? Well, in the official announcement of its new silicone, Samsung specifically touted some of its stand-out image processing capabilities, such as UHD video recording and playback at 120fps, vastly improved low-light performance, and accurate shallow depth-of-field simulation

Samsung Exynos 9810 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 specs comparison

Image
Samsung's all-new  Exynos 9810 chipset just became official , setting its sights straight to the upcoming Galaxy S9 and S9+. Well, at least in certain regions. With four high-performance cores clocked at up to 2.9GHz and accompanied by another quad-cluster of efficient cores that will go easy on your battery, a super-speedy Cat.18 LTE modem that enables downlink speeds of up to 1.2Gbps and 200Mbps of uplink, neural network-based deep learning, and probably most importantly, "real-time out-of-focus photography in high resolution and brighter pictures in low light with reduced noise and motion blur", the Exynos 9810 is forming to be a beastly silicon. But how does it fare against the elephant in the room, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chipset, which will be powering the US-bound version of the Galaxy S9 and S9+? That one is also packing some serious horsepower, snappy LTE speeds, and all the bell and whistles to propel the Galaxies just as good as the Exynos chip

Samsung officially unveils the Exynos 9810, touts AI features, advanced 3D "hybrid" face recognition

Image
The first true 9-series Exynos is here, and while it's still being built on a 10nm process, it promises increased performance and lower power draw"  Back in November, we caught first wind of Samsung's  next-gen Exynos chipset , which was revealed in passing in press materials from Samsung. However, at that time, information about the new SoC was scant, with details being withheld for a final reveal further down the line. And here we are now, with an official announcement from Samsung, outlining some of the best new features and capabilities of the chipset. The Exynos 9810 is still being built on Samsung's 10nm manufacturing node, contrary to earlier rumors alleging an 8nm process, but the second-generation 10nm FinFET manufacturing node is promising higher performance with a lower power draw for the new chipset. Furthermore, the Exynos 9810 boasts custom CPU cores, an upgraded GPU, and advanced machine-learning and image-processing capabilities, which will be

Rose Pink Galaxy S8 and S8+ launch in the UK

Image
Last June, Samsung announced Rose Pink color options for the Galaxy S8 and S8+, but it was initially available exclusively in South Korea and Taiwan, with the promise that it would make its way over to Europe later in 2017. Well, Samsung missed the deadline by a hair (or two), but the rose-colored S8 and S8+ are finally launching in Europe  albeit only in the UK at the time being. The new color variation, which Samsung describes as  "inspired by nature," "sophisticated and modern,"  joins the existing color lineup of Arctic Silver, Midnight Black, Coral Blue, and Orchid Gray. The rose-colored versions of the S8 and S8+ will be available only through EE of Carphone Warehouse in the UK, as these two retailers have exclusivity deals with Samsung,  Express UK  reports. Dutch retailer Besimpel has also confirmed that it will start selling the Rose Pink S8 and S8+, although there's no information yet as to when it will hit store shelves in the Netherla
