Xiaomi Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite with Full Specification, Review, Price and features

Xiaomi India on Thursday launched the selfie-centric Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite smartphones and announced the release of the global version of MIUI 9 -- an upgrade to its customised Android-based operating system (OS).

Xiaomi today introduced a new series of phones in the Indian market with the launch of the Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite at an event in New Delhi.RedmiY1 Lite is the cheaper sibling in the selfie-centric series at a price of Rs 6,999.

Both the smartphones will go on sale starting November 8 on e-commerce site Amazon.in.

Redmi Y1 is Xiaomi`s first smartphone in India which features selfie light and a 16 MP front facing camera. It has a 13MP f/2.0 rear camera.Thedevice has 5.5 inch HD display with Corning Gorilla glass and is powered by a 3,080mAh battery.

Redmi Y1 houses Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 octa-core chipset, a dedicated micro-SD card slot and dual-SIM (nano+nano) slots. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the rear of the device.

Meanwhile, Redmi Y1 Lite features an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, sports a dedicated micro-SD card slot with dual-SIM (nano+nano) capabilities and 5.5 inch HD display.

Similar to Redmi Y1, the smartphone features a 13 MP f/2.0 rear camera and is powered by a 3080mAh battery.

Meanwhile, MIUI 9 upgrade will start rolling out from November 3, starting with three devices -- Mi Max 2, Mi Mix 2 and Redmi Note 4 smartphones.

The update includes India-specific features such as a "panchang calender", Indian festival cards and IRCTC card that makes SMSes by IRCTC easy to read.

According to Jai Mani, Lead Product Manager, Xiaomi India, MIUI 9 will be as fast as stock Android OS.

The new OS based on Android Nougat also supports three major style notifications which are multiple styles, bundling notifications and quick replies.

Redmi Y1 has been launched at a price point of Rs 8,999 for 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant and Rs 10,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant.

The Redmi Y1 Lite is a toned down version of the Y1 for Rs 6,999. The Lite version features a 5.5-inch HD display, but comes with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of storage. You get a dedicated microSD slot, a 13 MP rear camera and the same 3,080 mAh battery. An IR blaster lets you use the phone as a universal remote.

This device is powered by the more battery-sensitive Snapdragon 425 chip and runs MIUI 9 on top of Android Nougat 7.1.2.

The devices will be available on Mi.com and Amazon India as well as at offline retail channels. Also announced was a partnership with Reliance Digital.

The devices will ship from 8 November.

The relatively more expensive Y1 comes a 16 MP front-facing camera at a price tag of Rs 8,999 for the 3 GB+32 GB RAM+storage variant. The 4 GB+64 GB variant will be available for Rs 10,999. Both variants are available in gold and black colour options. Internally, the device is powered by a Snapdragon 435 chip that's clocked up to 1.4 GHz. It also supports Quick Charge 3.0.

The Redmi Y1 which could be seen as the successor to the Redmi 4 series of phones and is the first smartphone in its price range to feature a 16 MP selfie shooter. The smartphone will be sold exclusively on Mi.com and Amazon.in.

The device features a plastic build with a 5.5-inch HD IPS display with a resolution of 1280x720.

The primary camera here is a 13 MP shooter with autofocus and an LED flash. The front-facing 16 MP camera also features a flash alongside for low-light selfies. The Redmi Y1 runs Android Nougat 7.1.2 out of the box featuring Xiaomi's MIUI 9. The smartphone also gets a 3,080 mAh non-removable battery unit.

Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS and an infrared port. Also available is a standard micro USB port for charging and data transfers.
