Drama in Zoo: Tiger tested positive to Corona Virus

Every day there is new data about the SARS-CoV-2 virus. On the one hand, any new information about the disease is good, because to defeat CoVID-19, scientists need to know as much as possible. On the other hand, some data can not be called good – for example, the mortality rate from coronavirus has increased to 5.5% worldwide, and both elderly and young people are in a serious condition in intensive care wards. Another unpleasant news was the news of a tigress named Nadia from the zoo in the Bronx, new York, who tested positive for the coronavirus. Researchers believe that Nadia was infected by zoo employees, who could have had the disease without symptoms. Nadia became the first animal with a confirmed diagnosis of CoVID-19 in the world, but it is also alarming that three tigers and three lions were also infected.

What happened to tigers and lions in the US?
The news that a tigress at the zoo was allegedly infected by a person without symptoms of CoVID-19, involuntarily brings back memories of the sixth episode of the first season of the series “the Walking dead”, in which the main character learns the terrible truth from an epidemiologist from the Center for disease control and prevention (CDC). It turns out that all people are already infected, but some people will only show symptoms after death. Perhaps this is not the best comparison with CoVID-19, since there are no zombies, but the asymptomatic course of CoVID-19 in some patients still has similarities to the fictional virus from the TV series.

According to NBC New York CoVID-19 infected not only 4-year-old Malay tigress Nadia, but also three other tigers and three lions. Let me remind you that due to the severe epidemiological situation in the United States, all zoos were closed to visitors on March 16, and the first symptoms of animals appeared only on the 27th: all seven animals developed a dry cough and decreased appetite. As representatives of the zoo told NBC, otherwise all the animals of the cat family feel well and cope with the infection with the help of a veterinarian. However, only the tigress Nadia was tested for a coronavirus infection. But does this mean that any animals can become infected with CoVID-19?

What animals suffer from CoVID-19?
The question of whether Pets are sick with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has been worrying researchers since its appearance in Chinese Wuhan at the end of last year. However, until now, scientists have not been able to accurately identify the natural host of the coronavirus. Presumably, the virus originated from bats or pangolins-mammals that live in South Africa and are on the verge of extinction due to poaching. Read more about how pangolins came to be suspected by scientists in our article. Let me remind you that the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is 70% similar to the genome of the SARS virus (severe acute respiratory syndrome), an outbreak of which occurred in 2003 and killed 774 people, and the total number of infected was more than 8 thousand. The natural host of the coronavirus at the time, turned out to be bats.

Back in November last year, SARS-Cov-2 broke the main barrier – it is about the transmission of the virus from an animal to a person and its subsequent rapid transmission between people. Earlier, the world media wrote about a Hong Kong dog that tested positive for coronavirus, as well as its owner, but the amount of the pathogen in the animal's body was extremely low. After that, experts in Hong Kong concluded that domestic dogs and cats can not transmit the virus to people, while they themselves can be infected. Read more about cases of infection of Pets in the article of my colleague Daria Yeletskaya.

However, the Earth is full of rumors and at the end of March, information began to appear on social networks about people who put their Pets to sleep for fear of getting infected from them. However, there is no evidence that animals can spread the virus. The case of the tigress Nadia at the Bronx zoo showed that the animals themselves can get infected from humans, but they can't infect us. Unfortunately, we ourselves are a threat to Pets. So, one of the first cases of CoVID-19 in Wuhan was a teacher from the UK, who shared his story after recovery. He said that during the illness, his kitten also felt bad, and then died. In contrast to this case, according to CGNT, there was a case in xiangang (China) – a domestic cat tested positive for coronavirus. It is noteworthy that no symptoms are observed in the animal – at the time of writing, the cat is under quarantine under the supervision of veterinarians.

Today, scientists around the world are studying CoVID-19. For example, some researchers are trying to understand the susceptibility of various animal species to coronavirus and determine how it spreads in the population. This is reported on the website of the world organization for animal health, whose headquarters are located in Paris. However, there are still more questions than answers. Such uncertainty, unfortunately, causes panic-fake news, along with the lack of a massive amount of data about the coronavirus, pushes people to do terrible things.

According to an article published in the Bell, in Britain, people started setting fire to 5G cell towers. According to experts, this can lead to the fall of infrastructure needed during a pandemic. It is surprising that some of us become allies of CoVID-19, while sincerely believing that they are acting for the benefit of others.

Let me remind you that the coronavirus pandemic in the world at the time of writing this article has not reached its peak, and most of the news that comes from different countries of the world is alarming. But no matter what the news is, you should never panic. You don't need to keep track of the number of people who died every second.instead, go to work or read your favorite book, watch a movie or TV series. And don't put your Pets to sleep – they can't harm you and infect you with coronavirus. On the contrary, their health depends on you. So keep yourself isolated and communicate with other people as little as possible. Remember, the best thing you can do for yourself, your family, and your four – legged friend is to follow the recommendations of the world health organization. As for the symptoms of CoVID-19 in people, most experience mild or moderate symptoms, such as a high temperature and cough, which pass within a few weeks. However, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at risk, as they may have a severe form of the disease. God bless you.
