Iran protests: Telegram and Instagram restricted

Image
Iran has moved to restrict social media networks that have been used to organise four days of anti-establishment protests. The "temporary" restrictions on the apps Telegram and Instagram were imposed to "maintain tranquillity", state news agency Irib reports. The protests have been the biggest show of dissent since huge rallies in 2009. President Hassan Rouhani has said Iranians have the right to protest, but not cause disorder. The protests began in the north-east as an outcry against economic hardship and rising prices, but turned political in many places, with slogans chanted against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mr Rouhani and Iran's interventionist foreign policy in the region. In his first public comments since the demonstrations broke out, the Iranian president, speaking at a cabinet meeting, said that citizens were "completely free to make criticism and even protests". But he added that the government would not tolerate

Facebook: Jokes 'no excuse' for harassment

Image
Facebook has published its internal workplace harassment policy in part to help other companies, chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has said. The policy's definitions of harassment include unwelcome sexual advances, threats, insensitive jokes and innuendo. It states that it is no defence to pass off an offensive comment as a joke or to blame the influence of alcohol. It also says harassment reports should be responded to within 24 hours. A team will then investigate the allegations but will not be responsible for the final outcome, which can range from no action to the accused employee being fired. Facebook also says it may consider an employee to be in breach of the policy even if their behaviour is not against the law. In the document, Facebook also suggests areas companies should consider when developing their own policies, including: whether colleagues can date each other what constitutes an appropriate greeting whether managers should connect with th

Facebook disables ethnicity advert targeting system

Image
Advertisers could choose to exclude groups such as wheelchair users, ProPublica found Facebook has temporarily turned off a system that let advertisers choose which ethnic and minority groups saw their ads. It said it would investigate how the feature was being used by advertisers. News organisation ProPublica discovered that the system could be abused by posting discriminatory ads on the social network. Facebook said it would look for a way to change the system so it could not be used "inappropriately". Last week, ProPublica tried again  to post discriminatory ads that were not shown to people who were: African-American Jewish Hispanic interested in Islam part of other ethnic or minority groups All the ads it sub

Twitter OAuth using PHP to make your own twitter web client

Image
My last post on twitter was an introduction on how to use twitter, a lot of things have changed since then but that post just covers a few basics to get you started. This post is for developers on how to build your own twitter web client - which means instead of using twitter.com or any other client out there (echofon, chromed bird, TweetDeck, etc.) to tweet, you can make your own app to work with twitter. More specifically this post shows how to use OAuth to tweet using PHP. OAuth (Open Authentication) is an authenticating protocol that allows internet users to approve an application to act on their behalf without the need for the user to share their password with the application. With OAuth the service provider (Twitter) issues tokens and it involves the exchange of tokens/keys and signing of requests thus making it a secure protocol. Twitter uses OAuth and Basic Auth (username and password used for authentication) but on  16-August-2010  Twitter is ending support for basic auth,

Facebook Messenger payments comes to UK

Image
Image caption A virtual shower of money accompanies successful payments Facebook has chosen the UK as the first country outside the US to get its Messenger payments service. Later on Monday, local users will be able to send each other money in a message. The service was launched in the US in 2015. The social network says it has been widely used to split restaurant bills, pay babysitters and simply send gifts. It says most users send less than $50 (£38). The company says the service is coming to the UK because it has so many "mobile-savvy consumers". Facebook is collaborating with all the major banks and credit card firms to launch Messenger payments, which will require both the sender and recipient of money to register their payment cards. But three years ago, UK banks launched their own instant payments service - Paym - which has not made a huge impact on the way we pay. So, why should this be any different? Facebook claims Messenger payments will catch on beca
